SpeedView for Google Android

SpeedView is an advanced speedometer application that uses the phone's built-in GPS system to show your current maximum and average speed, as well as the direction, total distance, and time traveled. Suitable for running, car driving, biking, or hiking.

  • High accuracy GPS-based speedometer that is more accurate than the one in your car.
  • Linear compass Shows your current direction of travel. A compass mode is also available.
  • HUD view Mirrors the numbers so you can place your phone on your car's dashboard and see the speed reflected in the front glass. You can check out this video to see how it works.
  • Speed graph Displays a graph chart covering the last several minutes.
  • Display units Supports units such as miles, kilometers, and nautical miles.
  • Speed warning You can set the speed limits for three different types of roads so that when you go too fast a visual alert or sound will notify you.

  • GPX track export Enables you to save your current track to the SD card or email it to someone. The GPX format is supported by Google Earth and many other programs.
  • Background mode You can minimize the program and keep it running in the background. It will work as usual and even notify you when you exceed the speed limit.

Please note that the accuracy of the speed readings depends on the GPS reception quality, which can be affected by a multitude of error-introducing factors (more on that below).

In addition, note that this application is not optimized to run on 7-inch tablets or devices with uncommon screen resolutions. You will be able to run and use it, but it may not display properly. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to post them on our blog.

Important GPS tips: It can take about 45 seconds to acquire satellite signals when you first start the application, or roughly 15 seconds if it has been used recently. Because the signal cannot pass through solid non-transparent objects, GPS requires an unobstructed view of the sky to work correctly. Thus, signal reception can be degraded by tall buildings, bridges, tunnels, mountains, etc. Also, moving around while locking onto several satellites makes it harder for those separate signals to triangulate your exact location. Please try to stand still when receiving a GPS fix, unless there is absolutely no alternative.

'Here I am' Android App - Let people know where you are throgh SMS

Let people know where you are! This application can send an SMS or email containing your coordinates and a link to Google Maps. This link can also be opened in the Maps application on an Android device or iPhone, and can be used as an endpoint for driving directions.
This app can utilize location information from both GPS satellites and wireless networks. Using GPS satellites to track location allows for maximum accuracy, so it is the application's preferred method. If you have the "Use GPS satellites" option disabled under the Location & security settings on your device, Android will try to determine your location via a technique called triangulation that depends on availability of cell tower and Wi-Fi access points.

Example message
My Location:
48°51'28.99", 2°17'39.34"
Parc du Champ de Mars, Paris
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=48.85805,02.29426

Additional features
  • Copy the current location to clipboard.
  • Insert the last know location.
  • Open your current location in the Maps app.
  • Specify output coordinates display format.
  • Display either the address or elevation.

MemoClip - Enhances the Windows Clipboard

MemoClip is a clipboard extender and information manager that significantly enhances the capabilities of the Windows Clipboard. The standard "copy and paste" feature of Windows lets you transfer only one piece of information at a time. Moreover, some third-party programs, or Windows itself, can overwrite the clipboard whether you are ready or not.

What can MemoClip do?

MemoClip watches the Windows Clipboard and automatically captures all items that you cut or copy. Once your data is saved in MemoClip, you can view, edit, format, export it and even combine items. Any item can be placed back on the Clipboard or pasted directly into an application with just a few mouse clicks, key presses or a user-defined global hotkey.

You can store an unlimited number of items in collections that are organized in a tree like category structure. Each collection has separate rules as to how long to keep information, so you can use a "Short-Term" collection to track your Clipboard history for the past few days.

In addition to auto-capture, you can manually add notes in just two key strokes. Jot down ideas, phone numbers, addresses or everything you currently have in that stack of yellow stickies. Create "Long-Term" collections to keep your bookmarks, letter closings, recipes, project notes, snippets of HTML code, or whatever.

MemoClip also supports auto-replace, regardless of what application you may be working with. Insert commonly used text by entering a short abbreviation (text shortcut) nickname. For example, you could abbreviate the name of your firm/organization “cs” and have it expand to “Code Sector Inc." after pressing Space. Enter special symbols like ™ by simply typing (tm). Insert signatures in email messages. All this and much more.

Are you a web surfer?

Just copy a link or text from a web page and MemoClip automatically stores it until you need it. Pressing Ctrl+Ins twice will store a selection to the current collection. Append mode allows you make a digest of a web page contents and save it to a collection or to a file on a disk.

Working with a text editor or a spreadsheet?

MemoClip can help you copy several blocks of text from one place to another without having to scroll back and forth. The number of items that can be stored and recalled is unlimited, so you can freely copy and paste a large range of data into your favorite spreadsheet.

Are you a programmer, tester or support technician?

If so, this utility is for you. MemoClip is extremely useful when you do any kind of support via email and have to answer similar questions over and over again. It will save hours of typing similar blocks of text in your messages.

Direct Folders - Direct access to your favorite recent folders.

Direct Folders guarantees you quick and direct access to your favorite and recent folders. Now you can jump to any deeply nested folder in just a single mouse click! It also automatically resizes every standard file dialog, so you can see a larger number of files. You will be able to find what you are looking for with a lot less scrolling.
One of the many useful features of Direct Folders is its ability to automatically switch the folder view of open dialogs to thumbnails, list or details depending on the application you are working with. You can select your preference of file sort order to be the default as well.
 How Direct Folders works
There are several ways to access Direct Folders. One of the easiest is to simply double click in an empty area of the desktop, Explorer or File Open/Save dialog box, which brings up a menu. Total Commander and DirectoryOpus are also supported.
Select a favorite or recent folder from this menu and the file dialog immediately jumps to that folder. If you activate this menu from the desktop or tray icon, this folder will be opened in the Windows Explorer (or another file manager of your preference).
Direct Folders actions when the file dialog opens:
  • Resizes the file dialog box.
  • Sets the custom files view mode and sort order.
  • Pro: Jumps to the last used folder or any folder you specified.
  • Pro: Scrolls to the last used file in that folder.
The ClickSwitch feature will make a file dialog instantly jump to the folder already opened in Explorer, Total Commander or Directory Opus. Just switch to the window you need.

TeraCopy - Copy and move files at the maximum possible speed

One of the most common complaints about newer versions of Windows is the slow copying speed, especially when transferring lots of files over the network. If you want to speed up your copying or if you regularly transfer large amounts of data and have to stop the process to perform some other disk-intensive task, this program may be just what you need.
TeraCopy is designed to copy and move files at the maximum possible speed. It skips bad files during the copying process, and then displays them at the end of the transfer so that you can see which ones need attention. TeraCopy can automatically check the copied files for errors by calculating their CRC checksum values. It also provides a lot more information about the files being copied than its Windows counterpart. TeraCopy integrates with Windows Explorer's right-click menu and can be set as the default copy handler.
  • Copy files faster: TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce the seek times. Asynchronous copying speeds up the file transfer between two physical hard drives.
  • Pause and resume file transfer activities: Pause the copy process at any time in order to free up system resources and continue with a single click.
  • Error recovery: In case of a copy error, TeraCopy will try several times to recover and, in the worse case scenario, will simply skip the file, not terminating the entire transfer.
  • Interactive file list: TeraCopy shows the failed file transfers and lets you fix the problem and recopy only the problem files.
  • Shell integration: TeraCopy can completely replace the Explorer copy and move functions, in turn enabling you to work with files as usual.
  • Full Unicode support.
  • Windows 8 x64 support.

Google Public DNS: Largest Public DNS service and receives 70 Billion requests a day

We launched Google Public DNS in December 2009 to help make the web faster for everyone. Today, we’re no longer an experimental service. We’re the largest public DNS service in the world, handling an average of more than 70 billion requests a day.

DNS
acts like the phone book of the Internet. If you had to look up hundreds or thousands of phone numbers every day, you’d want a directory that was fast, secure and correct. That’s what Google Public DNS provides for tens of millions of people.

Google Public DNS has become particularly popular for our users internationally. Today, about 70 percent of its traffic comes from outside the U.S. We’ve maintained our strong presence in North America, South America and Europe, and beefed up our presence in Asia. We've also added entirely new access points to parts of the world where we previously didn't have Google Public DNS servers, including Australia, India, Japan and Nigeria.

Shortly after launch, we made a technical proposal for how public DNS services can work better with some kinds of important web hosts (known as content distribution networks, or CDNs) that have servers all of the world. We came up with a way to pass information to CDNs so they can send users to nearby servers. Our proposal, now called “edns-client-subnet,” continues to be discussed by members of the Internet Engineering Task Force. While we work with the IETF, other companies have started experimenting with implementing this proposal.

We’ve also taken steps to help support
IPv6. On World IPv6 Day, we announced our IPv6 addresses: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and 2001:4860:4860::8844 to supplement our original addresses, 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

Google Public DNS’s goal is simple: making the web—really, the whole Internet!—faster for our users. If you’d like to try it yourself, please see our page
Using Google Public DNS.

Google enables offline access for Google Docs Android app

Individual items in the Google Docs app for Android can be viewed offline when your mobile device has no Internet connectivity. Offline editing isn’t currently supported.

Make an item available offline

Many items in your Documents List can be made available offline. This includes Google documents, Google presentations, Google spreadsheets, uploaded images, and files in formats such as .pdf, .doc, .xls and .ppt. Google Sites, Google drawings, Google forms, Fusion Tables and collections can’t be made available offline.
You can make an item available offline while you have an Internet connection. You can also request make an item available offline when your device is disconnected from the Internet. The item will update the next time your device regains Internet connectivity.

A notification that indicates if an item is available for offline viewing will appear in the top (phone) or the bottom right (tablet) of your screen. A failure notification may appear if you have intermittent connectivity, or if there isn’t enough space to store the item on your Android device.

Access and manage offline items

When your Android device loses Internet connectivity, you can access your offline items by touching Offline on the landing page of the Google Docs app (phone), or in the left-hand navigation panel (tablet).
The files available for offline viewing will appear in this section of the app, with one of the following designations:
  • Up to date: Items that are in sync with their online state. If you’re offline, the latest edits reflected will be those from the last time your device had Internet connectivity.
  • Out of date: Items for which online edits have been made since the offline version was updated.
  • Not yet available: Some items show state if your device hasn’t downloaded the item yet. For example, this may happen when you have an intermittent Internet connection.
When your device is disconnected, you can still take some actions on your offline docs and files such as starring or renaming items.

Updating offline items

If your Android device is connected to WiFi, your offline items will be synced automatically every few hours.
However, if your Android device is connected to your carrier’s network (i.e. 3G), you’ll need to prompt the Google Docs app to update your offline items. This is done to avoid overloading your mobile data plan.
Here’s how to update your offline items:
  1. When you have an active connection, press the Update button for specific items in the Offline folder.
  2. Open the items from your Documents List.
  3. Click Refresh in your Documents List and respond to the prompt about updating your offline items.

Introduction to HTML5

What is HTML5?
HTML5 is being developed as the next major revision of HTML (HyperText Markup Language), the core markup language of the World Wide Web. HTML5 is the proposed next standard for HTML 4.01, XHTML 1.0 and DOM Level 2 HTML. It aims to reduce the need for proprietary plug-in-based rich internet application (RIA) technologies such as Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight.

Its development is still under process. The difference between HTML5 and its immediate predecessors HTML4.01 and XHTML1.1 is that HTML5 has features like video playback and drag-and-drop which were missing in the earlier versions.

The origin of the specification dates back to June 2004 by the (WHATWG) Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group under the name Web Applications1.0.In March 2010 WHATWG was ready with the draft standard state of the specification. The editor of HTML5 is Ian Hickson of Google,Inc.Also at this point of time the specification was ready in working draft state at World Wide Web Consortium.

HTML5 was the starting point of the group working upon the new HTML at W3C in 2007.On 22nd January 2008 this working group published the First Public Working Draft of HTML5. The specification is still under development and will remain to be so for years to come although some parts of it will be ready to be implemented in the browsers soon. It is being estimated that HTML5 will reach the final recommendation stage in late 2010.It will be recommended by W3C.  Ian Hickson is expecting HTML5 to reach the Candidate Recommendation stage in 2012.The specification will be recommended by W3C only if it has "100% complete and fully interoperable implementations".
HTML5 will also help in building new features.

One feature that the Gmail design team is now working on is the ability to drag files from the desktop into the browser. This feature will be important in that it will bring Web applications even closer in feature functionality to desktop applications, de Boor said.

Gmail will also make use of HTML5's database standards. Now, the e-mail service uses Google Gears to store mail for offline reading, but over time that will migrate to the HTML5 standards.
De Boor also talked about adding new features that couldn't be rendered using HTML5.

One will be the ability to drag files from the browser window onto the desktop. To do this, his team is working on a new data transfer protocol, called "downloadurl."

"We tried to get this in HTML5," but were unable to do so. He jokingly said that Google will have to lobby to have some of the functionality needed to make that happen added into HTML6, which, as of today, does not exist in any form.
Instead of rendering it into a standard, the web design company will "encourage other browsers to use it," he said.

He noted that the web design company doesn't wasn't to revisit the "browser wars" of the last decade. "We tried to learn from history and be much more cooperative to the other browser makers," he said.

Another new feature he talked about was something called "Magic iFrame," which would allow a user to take part of a Web page, rendered in a frame, and pull it out and make it its own full Web page in a new browser window.
HTML5 employs inputs which ensure full exhaustion on the modern websites. Some of the inputs are semantic replacements of general functions of generic block () and the inline () elements. Some of elements from HTML4.01 have been deleted and some new ones have been added to HTML5 to make it more efficient. The syntax of HTML5 is not based on SGML although their markup is same. Along with markup specification. Scripting application programming interfaces (APIs) is also specified by HTML5.

The new APIs specified are:
The canvas element for immediate mode 2Ddrawing.
Offline web applications.
Timed media playback.
Document editing.
Drag and drop.
Cross document messaging.
Browser history management.
